| No competition
here - losing just once, and sweeping all before her, even the WISPA
computer finally had to bow before the absolute superiority shown by Sarah
Fitz-Gerald. She set herself four goals, achieved them all, and did much,
much more for the game along the way.
As the latest advert says,
"there isn't much you can say to someone who's won everything
in the game ... CONGRATULATIONS is a start!" |

Not quite
sweeping all before him, but Peter Nicol recovered from every setback
and pitfall, and finished the year with an impressive array of trophies,
still World Champion, and regained the world number one status at the death.
England's gain, but he's still very much a Scot, and a credit to both
nations and the game of squash

The Qatar
Classic had it all - huge (for squash) prize money, spectacular setting,
great organisation, all the top players - a deserved success, and the likely
venue for the Women's World Open next year.

Botwright
mania was the media story of the year. Congratulations to Andrew Shelley
for thinking it up, Stephen Line for taking the shots, and of course to
Vicky herself, without whom none of it would have been possible.
Vicky appeared in pretty much any paper you could care to
mention, was one of the Sunday Times' "People of the Week", was in the News
of the World "Sin Bin", and made Lycos's list of top 50 searched for
athletes of 2001.

In the week
before his 34th birthday, Chris Walker played the match of his life, and
kept on doing it, falling just one game short of an impossible dream. Went
one better later that month, winning the US professional championships.
